(Nepeta cataria)

One of the active ingredients in catnip oil, nepatalactone, has shown to be 10 times more effective than DEET in repelling mosquitos. It has also been shown to be effective in deterring underground insects such as termites. Catnip oil is also used for stomach complaints and muscle cramps.

Therapeutic Properties: bug repellant, anti-spasmodic, astringent, anti inflammatory, nervine, sedative, anesthetic, carminative

Application: make a spray: Mix 1/4 t - ½ t catnip oil with 1 cup isopropyl alcohol and 1 cup water in a spray bottle. Spray clothes and extremities. Catnip oil may cause some skin irritation, so use caution on and around skin.

Aromatic: harsh, strong, earthy aroma with a slight subdued mint undertone

Blends well with: grapefruit, lavender, lemon, marjoram, sweet orange, other mints, and rosemary

Contra-indications: may cause irritation on sensitive skin and increase photosensitivity. Avoid use during pregnancy. Use caution with infants and small children.
